Super Sculpey™
Super Sculpey

Super Sculpey™ is a flesh coloured polymer clay that can be fired in an oven at 130°C. It holds a good level of detail and doesn’t shrink much when it’s fired. The advantage of using a product like Super Sculpey is that it won’t air dry. You can add and remove detail or just scrap it and start again. Once you’re happy with the result you can fire it. I’ve had no major issues with multiple firings, adding more detail as I go. Once set, Super Sculpey can be sanded, but doesn’t handle being drilled as it tends to crack and chip. You should be able to find this product at any good art and craft supplies shop.

Knead It

Available from hardware stores, this is a rapid setting filler for bulk work, not recommended for detailed work, leave that for Green Stuff. It sets in just a few minutes so is great for filling big gaps and creating basic shapes.

Green Stuff

The best product around for detailed work, Green Stuff gives you plenty of time to get the detail right. A few tips for working with Green Stuff:

Try using Vaseline instead of water to prevent your tools sticking; you’ll get a smoother result.

Green Stuff is very elastic and soft when it’s warm, stiff and resistant when it’s cold.

You don’t have to get all the detail done in the first 10 minutes. Get a basic shape, leave it for 20 minutes then go back to it, as it begins to firm, it accepts more detail.

Tools and Marks

There are a number of good quality sculpting tools available to buy from jewellers supplies and hobby shops. If you’re planning on doing quite a bit of sculpting, I’d recommend investing in some. If your not going to use them often, then finding the right tools for sculpting means looking at what you have lying around. A few tools I use:

Games Workshop Sculpting Tool

This tool is available from all Games Workshop Stores, Games Workshop Hobby Service Centre and independent retailers. I’ve modified the end of mine by filing a hook into the point; I use this tool for detail work.

Wax Sculpting Tool

This tool is from a set that I purchased from a specialty sculpting store, it makes really smooth marks. I used this to add detail to the Laius Horror’s Tail section.

Sewing Machine Needle

I was more interested in the back-end of the needle. I’ve used a modelling knife to hold the needle in place.

Nail/Cuticle Tool

This type of tool is used by heaps of budding and professional sculptors alike. Just make sure you let the owner know you’re going to use it for this purpose.
