Introduction

Isolated from its parent fleet, the frozen Hive Ship has created a new vanguard organism never before encountered by the Imperium. This terrifying Monstrosity has secretly hidden itself amongst its prey, waiting for the right moment to reveal itself and feed. The Laius Horror employs a chilling hunting technique. From initial Imperial reports, eye witnesses describe what appear to be wounded comrades crying for help and attempting to reach friendly lines before erupting in an explosive shower of gore as the Laius Horror seems to burst out of it's host. How a creature so large hides within a human is unknown, but is even more proof of its heresy against life.

Research

I always do some research before getting stuck into any project – it helps me get ideas going and gives me clear objectives to meet as the project advances. My objectives for this project helped me remember that the beast should:

• Approximately 1/3 larger than a Carnifex. Follow the design essentials for Tyranids – six limbs, five armour ridges on its head etc. Show adaptation to its environment.
• Look basically intelligent and utterly menacing.

Most of my research and inspiration came from nature, I looked up images of Snakes, Dinosaurs, Sharks and Beetles. These all provided inspiration and some degree of reference.

From this research I created a set of concept sketches which acted as a guide to the kind of shapes and proportions needed to make the model work.

Materials and Resources

To complete this project I used

• One complete Carnifex kit
• The barrels from 6 Tyranid Warrior Barbed Stranglers
• A pair of large Scything talons from a second Carnifex (I initially planned to make my own)
• Rapid setting putty – for filling big gaps.
• Polymer clay – available from some hobby stores or art & crafts shops for making large parts with some degree of detail
• 2 packs of Green Stuff – for fine detail and small gaps
• Superglue Brass wire – for pinning Armature Wire Plastic rod
• Modelling saw
• Sculpting tools
