SCENERY MAKING PROJECT (Warhammer)

MAKING A HEDGE

This scenery project sheet describes how to make a hedge for your Warhammer tabletop.

You will need:

  • A pack of ordinary kitchen scouring pads
  • A hot glue gun
  • A large Citadel drybrush
  • A modelling knife, steel ruler and cutting mat or well-protected work surface
  • The following Citadel paints: Dark Angels Green, Goblin Green, Bestial Brown and some Citadel Chaos Black undercoat spray.
  • A strip of card the same length as the scouring pad (our example is 15cm long) and 3cm wide
  • Some sand for the base
  • Scissors
  • PVA glue

Making scenery can be a messy business so it’s a good idea to wear some old clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit of paint or glue on. Protect your work surface well with plenty of newspaper.

Making the Hedge

1

Plug in your hot glue gun. Take one of the nylon scouring pads and cut it in half lengthways. With the scouring pads we used, this gave us two pieces 15 x 60cm. Then cut yourself a piece of sturdy card 15 x 30cm.

2

By now the glue gun should have warmed up enough. Spread some glue along one half of the scouring pad. Fold the pad in half until the glue is dry. Then spread glue along the base of the pad and glue it onto the strip of card.

After a couple of minutes, your hedge will be dry enough to cut to shape. Take your scissors and start making cuts into the desired shape. Experiment here so that all of your hedges don’t look exactly the same. Just try to achieve a fairly rounded effect without straight, angular cuts.

4

Then cut the corners off the card. Again, you don’t have to be too accurate here, just remove the corner so you can place your hedges together at the desired angle. Then spread some PVA glue onto the card around the base of the hedge and set aside to dry.

Now it’s time to paint the hedge. Start by spraying the hedge with Citadel Black spray. When this has dried, lightly brush over the hedge with Dark Angels Green. Then do the same with Goblin Green to finish the hedge. Paint the base by drybrushing it with Bestial Brown and then paint the edge of the card with Goblin Green.

6 That’s the hedge complete. Once you’ve had a go at doing one it’s easy to get a little production line going of four or five at once. They are quick and easy to make and look great on the battlefield. Why not try adding a little variation by adding battlefield detritus such as broken shields and weapons etc., to the base of the hedge. You could also try making a gate out of balsa wood with a small piece of hedge each side.
